Summary of 2007 AAVMC/ASPH Joint Symposium
Partnerships for Preparedness: Future Directions for Schools of Public Health and Colleges of Veterinary Medicine April 22-24, 2007, Atlanta, GA
Introduction:
The AAVMC/ASPH Joint Symposium, Partnerships for Preparedness: Future Directions for Schools of Public Health and Colleges of Veterinary Medicine, was held April 22-24, 2007, at the Emory Conference Center Hotel in Atlanta, Ga. Over 225 public health and veterinary professionals and deans, faculty and students from schools of public health and colleges of veterinary medicine attended the two day symposium.
Built upon the strong connection between public health and veterinary medicine, the symposium focused on how schools of public health and colleges of veterinary medicine can work together to improve academic programs, public policy, workforce training and research. Veterinarians promote both animal and human health by emphasizing population health, comparative medicine, zoonotic diseases, food safety, and food security. Public health professionals study the impact of diseases on populations and promote health by focusing on preventive measures as opposed to curative medicine.
The symposium was highlighted with keynote addresses by Dr. David Satcher, Former US Surgeon General; RADM Kenneth Moritsugu, Acting US Surgeon General; and Dr. Lonnie, King, Director, CDC-NCZVED.
The generous support provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service made this conference possible. We would also like to acknowledge the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service for their support of the conference. The efforts of the Planning Committee, the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges and the Association of Schools of Public Health resulted in a valuable experience for all participants.
