ASPH is pleased to present this global health competency model designed to provide a framework for the abilities expected of master’s-level students in global health programs that will prepare them for successful performance in the global public health workforce. It is anticipated that faculty and students in global health programs across a broad range of institutions beyond graduate schools of public health – schools of international relations/affairs, business schools, law schools and, of course, other health professions’ schools, such as those in medicine and nursing, as well as programs in the biological and social sciences – will find value in this competency model.

Background Information
Due to the lack of consensus on core global health competencies expected of masters-level students in global health programs, universities provide varying levels of instruction and practica for their students. In addition, the rapid spread of H1N1 and the existence of other public health threats across the globe, as well as global health-related infrastructure changes underway at many flagship universities, has spurred ASPH to begin a national process to create a global health competency model. The competency model will identify competencies for master's level students in global health programs.
Goal
To promote population health, safety, and well-being at local and global levels by enhancing the global health competence of students in schools of public health and related global health educational programs.
Workgroup Members, Leadership, and Consultant Expertise
Dean Pierre Buekens (Tulane), former chair of the ASPH Global Health Committee led the Leadership Group for the project. Click here for a list of Leadership Group members.
The initial framing of the project took place during a Consensus Conference in September 2009. Click here for a full list of Consensus Conference participants.
Workgroups were tasked with identifying the competencies under each domain. Each domain workgroup was led by two co-chairs representing academia and practice, and consisted of core and resource workgroup members with global health expertise from both academia and practice. ASPH worked with two consultants who brought their expertise in competency-based education to the project: Dr. Judith Calhoun (University of Michigan) and Dr. Elizabeth Ablah (University of Kansas).
