The University of Kentucky College of Public Health was approved by the University of Kentucky Board of Trustees in the fall of 1998 and accepted its first Master of Public Health (M.P.H.) and Doctor of Public Health (Dr.P.H.) students in the 2000-01 academic year. Through our efforts in education, research and service, our mission at the College of Public Health is to make Kentucky, the nation and the world a healthier place to live. We have a new, vibrant and exceptional opportunity to work with the many academic programs and resources of the University to contribute to its efforts to become a top 20 public research university by 2020. The UK Markey Cancer Center is nationally recognized for its expertise in cancer epidemiology, and our cancer registry at the Markey Cancer Control Program is gold-certified as one of the premier cancer registries in North America. The Center has been funded as a site for the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program of the National Cancer Institute, the most authoritative source of information on cancer incidence and survival in the United States. As a land-grant institution with ties to the agricultural community, UK maintains a strong focus on rural health disparities, particularly in the central highlands of Appalachia. Community-based epidemiology studies in Appalachia and rural Kentucky are linked through the award-winning UK Center for Rural Health. Our Kentucky Injury Prevention Research Center offers innovative programs on research, education, injury prevention, and health services to reduce the risk of illness and injury. A combined degree with the College of Medicine, MD/MPH, is now available, and other combined degrees are under consideration.
