The ASPH/CDC Public Health Fellowship Program was established in 1995. Its goal is to address emerging needs of public health, and to provide leadership and professional opportunities at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for students and graduate students of ASPH member graduate schools of public health. The fellowships are from one to two years in duration, depending on the needs of CDC and the fellow. The Fellowship Program was established to strengthen the relationship between the academic public health community and public health practice agencies. The types of fellowships will vary according to specific areas of research or training within CDC's Centers/Institutes/Offices (CIOs).
What does the ASPH Fellowship offer you?
The fellowship program is sponsored cooperatively by the Association of Schools of Public Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, to provide leadership training in public health and prevention practice and policy. Selected fellows will have the opportunity to:
- Apply graduate education in the field
- Develop professional experience and expertise
- Contribute to public health research and practice
The stipend level for the one year fellowship positions will range from $43,500 to $46,500 and is based on the education level/degree requirement of the fellowship position. In addition to the fellowship stipend, the fellow will have access to a $4,000 “fellowship allowance” that is intended to cover health/dental/vision insurance premiums during the on year fellowship period. In addition, some positions may offer an additional “travel/training allowance” that may be used to cover project-related travel, tuition, journal subscriptions, association dues, etc. Not all positions will have a travel/training allowance.
The fellowship stipend is intended to cover all living expenses including housing and project related travel. Fellows are responsible for their own move to and from the fellowship site (relocation expenses are not covered). Fellows are also required to maintain their own health insurance while in the fellowship program.
When and where are the Fellowships offered?
Fellowship positions are full-time opportunities for the duration of 12 months (July 2009 - July 2010). Fellowships may be extended for an additional year, pending available funding and mutual agreement by the fellow, CDC, and ASPH.
Fellowship opportunities will be located either at CDC headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia, or at CDC geographical locations throughout the United States. Specific geographical locations for each fellowship position are indicated in the project descriptions. Selected fellows are required to relocate to the fellowship location; relocation expenses will not be reimbursed.
Eligibility
To be eligible, students must have received an MPH or Doctorate degree prior to the beginning of the fellowship (no later than July 2009). Early career professionals with MPH or Doctorate degrees (within 5 years of graduation) may also apply for the fellowship program. Applicants must have received their degree(s) from an ASPH-member, CEPH-accredited, graduate school of public health (a list of accredited schools with full ASPH membership can be accessed via the ASPH Web site), as well as be a U.S. citizen or hold a visa permitting permanent residence in the U.S., to be eligible for the fellowship program.
How are Fellows selected?
All applications to the fellowship program undergo a two-phase review process. In the first stage, the applications are reviewed by two faculty members from schools of public health (other than the applicant's institution) on the following criteria: quality of essay, strength of credentials, previous professional experience; and letters of recommendation. Applications approved by the faculty review are forwarded to CDC for the second phase. At CDC, technical advisors review the applications along with the faculty review comments to assess which of the candidates applying for the individual projects are most suited for the fellowship.
How do I apply to the program?
The 2009 deadline for applications was January 6, 2009. The next Request for Applications (RFA) is expected for release in November 2009.
