Public Health Reports (PHR) is the official journal of the United States Public Health Service. The Journal publishes six times annually on subjects of public health presenting discussions and issues challenging public health of the Nation. The editor of PHR is offering an internship of rich experience for students of public health.
What does the ASPH/PHR Internship offer you?
The selected student-intern will apply his/her classroom knowledge and skills to real-life public health situations through assistance to the editor on most aspects of Journal production. The intern will be expected to:
- Read new manuscripts and participate in weekly meetings of the Editorial Committee to review the papers;
- Assist the manuscript manager in finding appropriate peer reviewers for the papers that are accepted by the Editorial Committee;
- Conduct library research and check references for the technical editors who are finalizing manuscripts for publication;
- Participate with Journal staff and contractors to locate and select appropriate photographs to appear with manuscripts in the Journal;
- Manage the mailings of the Journal;
- Monitor and select public health news and contemporary developments and prepare the News and Notes Department of the Journal; and,
- Prepare a weekly report that summarizes the work performed.
The intern will perform work as assigned for the benefit of the Journal while simultaneously increase their understanding of public health, publications, epidemiology, survey design, public health law, and other facets of public health. Depending on the skills of the intern, (s)he might be given greater responsibilities to develop new editorial content for the Journal, such as conducting interviews.
When and where is the Internship offered?
There is currently one internship opportunity available. The internship will begin in June 2009 and will last for 10 weeks. The exact dates will be decided upon between the selected intern and the Editor of PHR. The intern will be located at the Office of Public Health Reports, based in Cincinnati, OH.
Eligibility
Students who are pursuing graduate degrees at ASPH-member schools of public health, accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH), may apply for the internship program. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or hold visas permitting permanent residence ("Green Card") in the U.S. to be eligible for the fellowship program.
Candidates must have strong organizational, writing, communication, and social skills. In addition, since the internship will be based at the Office of Public Health Reports located at the Cincinnati Children's Hospital, once accepted, the participant will need to provide a vaccination history, undergo drug testing at the beginning of the internship, and have a two stage TB test performed (at no charge to the intern).
